A Brief History

The Imperial Hotel has an illustrious, re-inventive, and extensive history. The original Imperial Hotel was built in 1890 designed by Japanese architect Yuzuru Watanabe. Due to natural disasters, the hotel was rebuilt between 1915–22, designed by American Architect Frank Llloyd Wright (a fellow Wisconsinite! How cool!). It was one of Lloyd’s most considerable pieces of work and even withstood the 1923 Great Kanto earthquake one year after its opening. For over 40 years it stood as one of Japan’s premiere hotels. Demolished in 1967, and rebuilt for a third time in the 1970’s, (and a 31-story added in 1983) – the current hotel is now known for its exquisite service and luxury accommodations. Throughout its years, many notable figures have stayed at the Imperial Hotel Tokyo including: Bob Hope, Queen Elizabeth II, Joe DiMaggio, Marilyn Monroe, Jodie Foster, Keanu Reeves, and many more!

Room Review

The top three levels hold the premier Imperial Floors, where the state-of-the-art, luxury rooms are located. I stayed in a mid-level floor with an exceptional city view. Of course, the housekeeping service was premier, along with all other services in the building. The room and bathroom setup were spacious and conveniently designed.

The single king-sized bed was modestly decorated and extremely comfortable. I also appreciated the generously-sized TV. Additionally, the desk setup was very convenient, as well as the lightweight side table. Even though I was there for only a week, there was plenty of dresser space for an extended stay. The in-house tea maker, tea bags, and tea set were not only elegant, but tasted magnificent and was the perfect way to wind down at the end of the day.

The Japanese bathrooms lived up to all the hype. My attached bathroom was closed off by a frosted-glass sliding door. It was set up with a corner vanity and three-pieced mirror, a small sitting stool, a toilet – of course, and a large shower with an adjacent bathtub. As expected, the toilet came with all of the bells, whistles, remotes, and buttons.

Daily Newspaper Delivery

I also loved the daily newspaper delivery to my room each morning – just an added convenience and personal, quaint touch!

OVERALL THOUGHTS

Overall, the hotel was top tier and larger than I had even imagined it. There was so much to explore in the hotel between the museum, arcade, shopping centers, gym, coffee shop, and multiple eateries. I will say the in-house museum did a wonderful job of laying out the Imperial Hotel’s history and notable facts. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at this beautifully decorated and wonderfully staffed accommodation, would definitely stay again, and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a five-star experience accommodation experience in Tokyo!
