Tickets

Before diving into the luau experience, let’s start with the ticket pricing. The cost of attending a luau can vary depending on the venue, location, and package. Typically, luau packages range from basic admission to more extravagant options. Higher tickets tend to come with premium seating, additional activities, and VIP treatment. Make sure to research and compare different options to find a package that suits your budget and preferences.

As mentioned, we went to the Paradise Cove Luau, and they offer three different ticket packages outlined here. We purchased the most inexpensive, Hawaiian Luau Package, and each ticket cost $140 USD. I’m happy we made the decision to not purchase the upgraded tickets – our spots on the side wing were still great! (The other perks in the upgraded ticket also didn’t justify the price in my opinion!)

Note that there are also ticket options that include transportation to and from your accommodation. We drove ourselves and the parking lot was very easy to manage. Our luau gates opened at 5pm, and they instructed us to leave our lodging by 3:30 PM to account for traffic.

Brief History

To truly appreciate the significance of a Hawaiian luau, you must first understand rich history and cultural context. Originally, luaus were feasts held to celebrate special occasions – such as births, weddings, or victories. These gatherings were celebrated with abundant food, music, dance, and a strong sense of aloha. Over time, the luau evolved into a cultural event that showcases the essence of Hawaiian traditions and hospitality.

Paradise Cove has been in business for over 20 years, and is one of Oahu’s most well known luau’s.

Arrival

Upon arrival, we waited in line for everyone to get checked in while being serenaded with live music. We were surrounded by a vibrant, lush atmosphere, full of tropical flowers and island greenery that set the stage for an unforgettable evening. We waited for about 15 minutes before making our way to the entrance, where we were greeted by friendly staff members who gave us our complimentary welcome drink and puka shell necklace, and we were then guided to our designated area.

Activities

After we were seated and set down our belongings, there were an abundance of ongoing, interactive activities that ran from approximately 5PM-7PM. There was a lei-making workshop to craft your own flower garland, photo stations with scenic backgrounds, photo ops with a tropical bird, and a Hawaiian (temporary) tattoo station. There were also various live music performances, opportunities for a group hula lesson, a coconut tree climbing showcase, and before dinner – the traditional pig roast. These activities provided a glimpse into the artistry and cultural craftsmanship of the Polynesian culture. There was also the small beachfront and a few souvenir shops and markets that we explored.

Food and Drinks

My tastebuds were not prepared for this amazing culinary adventure. Indulging in traditional Hawaiian cuisine was such a treat. The luau feast began around 7PM.

Pig Roast

The centerpiece of any luau is the kalua pig, a succulent dish slow-roasted in an underground oven, through a method called an imu cooking. The imu is an underground oven, and this method of cooking has been passed down from generation to generation. Wood is burned on top of the rock-lined pit in the ground. Once the rocks become hot enough, a whole pig is placed on top. The pig was covered with banana leaves to retain moisture during the cooking process. It takes several hours for the pig to be heated and ready for eating.

Drink Stands

There were multiple drink stands around the luau grounds available before, during, and after dinner. Of course, we had to make use of our $12 cove card (a pre-loaded credit that came with our package which could be used anywhere on the grounds). I used mine on some refreshing drinks – including a mai tai and a pineapple-infused frozen concoction – yum!

Buffet

The luau buffet was a vibrant and bountiful feast of traditional dishes that showcased the diverse flavors and culinary heritage of the islands. Here, we were given so many options to choose from, including (but not limited to!):

  • Meat variety: a pre-cooked kalua pig was an option, but there was also fish, chicken, and short ribs
  • Salad bar
  • Vegetable sides, macaroni salad, rice, etc.
  • Poi – a traditional Hawaiian dish that you must try, made from taro
  • Tropical fruits
  • Various desserts and sweet treats

Performances

Before, during, and after dinner, we were immersed in the captivating performances that brought the luau to life. The dancers were adorned in vibrant and beautifully decorated costumes. Be prepared to be mesmerized by the beauty of the music and dancing, as well as the captivating, skillful, and daring fire knife dancers. The traditional music featuring ukuleles and a slew of hula dances, traditional chants, and interactive performances made for the most enchanting night.

Final Thoughts

A Hawaiian luau is an experience that goes beyond entertainment – it’s a celebration of ohana (family) and aloha (love, peace, and compassion). I felt honored to get a part of this wonderful culture shared with me. I was enthralled by the stunning scenery, as well as the warmth and hospitality of the islands and the people. The luau serves as a gateway to the Hawaiian culture which offers a deeper understanding of traditions and values. Our Paradise Cove experience was an impressive one, and I highly recommend spending a night to attend a luau wherever it may be. Prepare to immerse yourself in the festivities and embark on an unforgettable experience of a lifetime!

Enjoy!

I hope you have the most wonderful time!
